US EPA Industry Sector Initiative
Major Health Care Organization
Partners completed a comprehensive environmental audit for all major facilities owned and operated by a major health care organization. The audit was completed in preparation for anticipated future audits by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of their focus on this particular industry sector.
Partners evaluated operations at facilities owned and/or operated by the organization, including research and clinical laboratories, patient care, facilities management, building and equipment maintenance, transportation, materials handling and storage, steam and power generation, and other utilities and ancillary operations.
This audit included inspection of numerous buildings and physical locations, coordination with multiple departments, and interviews with a variety of employees and contractors. Partners evaluated air emissions and permitting, refrigeration equipment operation and compliance, wastewater generation and permitting, stormwater compliance, hazardous chemical storage and handling, chemical inventory reporting, waste handling and disposal, oil handling and spill prevention, control and countermeasure (SPCC), asbestos management, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), and hazardous materials transportation (HAZMAT).
Partners summarized compliance findings in a report that included recommendations for addressing potential compliance issues, as well as initiatives for managing environmental issues more effectively throughout the organization.
